Glutathione acts as an important antioxidant in your body. However, enhancing testosterone may require alternative therapeutic strategies, rather than coenzyme Q10 supplementation. This summary provides a specific intention for health care providers, particularly physicians, toward using coenzyme Q10 as a synergistic supplement with drug or chemical-induced reproductive toxicity. In addition, according to the peer-reviewed literature in this specific context of research, studies performed on human males have revealed no beneficial effects of coenzyme Q10 supplementation on infertile men. However, coenzyme Q10 supplementation was found to counteract testosterone reduction induced by chemical reproductive toxicants, mainly by counteracting the destructive effect of the generated pro-oxidants. In addition, coenzyme Q10 was found to enhance the human nuclear factor (erythroid-derived 2)-like 2, which is a transcription factor that regulates the expression of certain antioxidant proteins 64,65.
Numerous studies have suggested that imbalance of prooxidants and antioxidants, and thus a shift in the redox state within a cell, can lead to DNA, protein and/or lipid damage, and thus to functional changes (22,23). For these studies, the activities of 3β-HSD (Fig. 8A), P450c17 (Fig. 8B) and 17β-HSD (Fig. 8C) were assayed by incubating cells with the substrates for each enzyme and measuring and adding all enzymatic products. Treatment of either young and old rats with BSO resulted in significantly reduced Leydig cell StAR, compared with age-matched controls. For testosterone assays, cells were incubated with dbcAMP (2 mm, B) or 25-HC (12.5 μm, C) for 2 h. The ability of the cells to produce testosterone was assayed in vitro by incubating the cells without (A) or with maximally stimulating LH (100 ng/ml) (B). 4B, the GSH concentration in Leydig cells isolated from old control animals was significantly lower, by about 30%, than the concentration in young control cells.
While other antioxidants like Vitamin C or E are well-known, glutathione is in a league of its own. Before we can connect the dots to testosterone, we have to appreciate what glutathione really is. Enhanced level of GSH, thickness of germinal layers in testes and testosterone in serum with JDEE (400 mg/kg) treatment alone to rats demanded the evaluation of JDEE for sexual behavior. First, increasing the cellular content of GSH beyond control levels with D3T increased testosterone production beyond control levels. Figure 7 shows the effects of in vivo BSO treatment on StAR and P450scc enzyme in Leydig cells isolated from young and old control (PBS treated) and BSO-treated rats.
